Typical, they feel that they don’t judge us enough based on our marks in class. Now they herd us into a large room like a bunch of sheep and make us stay there for 3 hours. Three hours for a simple test that will mark you an A, a B, a C+, a C, a C-… or the ohmyhorror F.
The test marks us based on our academic talent. We live in the 21st century people! Academic excellence does not decide our future… well not completely. Imagine if you will, a meeting with an uber important investor. You’re going to make the best speech you’ve made your entire life! Better than that speech you made waaaayyy back when you’re in the 10th grade. You’ve made sure to have an intro, a body, and a conclusion. Facts are cited and big, fancy numbers are added. Yet, the investor, that will decide your life and fortune for the next …. well for the rest of your life, is yawning. Out of boredom. Well down you go.
Social connections will get you through life. As long as you know the right people, you’re on the right path. Be funny! Good humour gets people on the good side of other people doesn’t it? Having a sociable attitude, passion, determination, and “life smartness” is the key to a successful future. (Yes, academic knowledge is different from life knowledge)
Well that’s just MY view. It seems apparent these days while the valedictorians are working as doctors and living a good life, the social butterflies are out there living an awesome life.
This doesn’t apply to any people like Bill Gates out there. His genius is not of this world… then again, his family was very wealthy even before he had his success with computers.
Parents are always telling their kids to do better in school for a good future. Or parents pressuring their kids (who are already smart)to tears to be the best (oh my, its that word. I wonder who came up with that word?). If the world were to run based on academic excellence then we wouldn’t have Paris Hilton making a million dollars just to show up at a nightclub. I know of a dentist who makes a third of that in a year.
1 day > 3 years
I’m not saying give up on studying or quit school. Because yes, that would be stupid. I’m saying: Be more life smart. Look for something you love to do. Have a burning determination to pursue it. Be funny, be happy. Know the right people. Academics aren’teverything. An A in a government exam will not necessarily mean you’ll have a pent house in the Upper East Side of New York City in the future, just the same as having F will mean you’ll be a hobo.

Yes that means if anyone saw my hand shaking while I took the English Provincial it was because it was freakin’ cold in that gym not because I was scared silly. =_=
EDIT JULY 24/08: I laugh now because I actually did quite well for English. But, that’s cause that’s my strongest subject. (my secret: write a tear-jerker, that earns you full points on the essay portion). We shall see how I fare on Math and Science come the 31st. (thanks to Honours class, Math was easy, I think I died on my Physics and Earth Science though)
